THE MAZE

HEXcavation was a scare maze designed for Terror Island at Blackgang Chine Theme Park on the Isle of Wight in 2019.  Set is a disused cinema attraction building, the maze utilised a rich narrative and multiple effects to create a terrifying encounter with an ancient Pagan deity.

AN ANCIENT EVIL UNEARTHED

Our back story set the maze inside a recent archaeological excavation that had unearthed the skeletal remains of Mallum, an ancient Pagan deity – invoking an ancient and primitive Pagan magical hex.

Creating a storm of excitement in both the archaeological and occult worlds, the site was placed under lockdown and under the control of Professor Carter from the National Institute of Archaeological Investigation.  Guests were dared to join the dig and discover the age-old secret of HEXcavation.

MAKING FACTION

The attraction blended local folklore with a fictional storyline to blue the lines of fact and fiction, challenging guests to navigate a ‘trunnel’, ‘perceived curtain maze’, ‘claustrophobia’ and ‘directional swap’.

The ‘carrie effect’ in the final scene utilised a quick-change performer appearance with timed lighting changes.

CRITICAL SUCCESS STORY

HEXcavation was a critical success with park guests, inciting guest feedback including ‘our group could not finish it… a sick individual created this’ and ‘HEXcavation is the best maze I have ever been in’.

Terror Island, which included HEXcavation alongside two other scare mazes was awarded ‘Best New Attraction 2020’ by the annual SCAR Awards.
