AtmosFEAR!’s site specific theatre productions are an entertaining and eerie experience in which a cast of performers bring a living story vividly to life, utilising live performance, sound, tactile effects and scent to totally immerse the audience in the narrative.

Site specific theatre productions use the constraints and characteristics of the host venue as part of the performance. By staging drama in appropriate real world settings, audiences easily engage with the production, lending greater authenticity to the performance.

Site specific theatre can shock, scare, entertain or educate an audience by combining storytelling, music, improvisation, classic theatre, interactivity, history and scare entertainment. Spooky children’s shows, illusion spectaculars, historical folk plays and scary sideshows can all be produced as one off, touring, or residential theatrical shows. Site Specific Theatre can be adapted to suit any age of audience.

Our productions immerse the audience in the theme by taking the action off the stage and placing it in and around the seated, or standing, audience. In the case of promenade style performances the audience will follow the performers around the host venue as they experience the show, in the case of environmental theatre the drama will incorporate the location itself to help impart the narrative.

AtmosFEAR! can produce and operate a site specific theatre show within your existing theme or storyline, or develop content around a new brief. Alternatively, you can choose from one of our existing productions. These shows can run several times throughout the day within a relatively small space and in almost all types and sizes of venue.

Site specific theatre can work particularly well as a seasonal attraction for your venue, for example, a children's Halloween show or a Chistmas mummers play, we can even resurrect a classic 'Grand Guignol' style production that will both shock and entertain an adult audience as they gasp in horror at our state of the art illusions.

Bringing Traditional Theatrical Storytelling

The Macabre Mummers are a band of theatrical performers whose material is based on the traditional mummer's plays of centuries past. Using lavish costumes and makeup, theatrical scores, new scripts and traditional storylines, AtmosFEAR! is completely re-imagineering mummers for a 21st century audience.

Historically, mummers were bands of rural performers who travelled the land performing seasonal folk plays with a variety of themes. The drama usually focussed on people's connection with the land, and performances were staged as the seasons changed. Often performed at Christmastide, mummer's plays were once a central feature of Yuletide celebrations, with mummer's performing in village squares, inns, great houses and castles.

Dressed in elaborate theatrical garb, and often wearing masks to hide their faces, mummer's plays delivered entertainment that would delight and amuse audiences with song, dance and prose, held together with a strong underlying message of 'good will triumph over evil'.

Today, AtmosFEAR! is reviving the tradition of mummers plays, producing dramatic living heritage. Using traditional characters and plotlines, and mixing them with new ones, The Macabre Mummers present a vivid recreation of historical storytelling theatre which can be performed in any appropriate historical venue.

In line with AtmosFEAR!'s core product, The Macabre Mummers productions feature unexpected twists and mysterious timeless atmospheres which combine elements of the ancient plays with the contemporary effects of lighting, sound and even scents, to create an otherworldly ambience. The colourful and vibrant performances have been described by audiences as 'magical', 'artistic', 'authentic' and 'enthralling'.

The Macabre Mummer's first play Soulstice - A Twisted Tale of Two Seasons, premiered at Smithills Hall, an ancient manor house in Lancashire, over the Christmas season in 2009. In 2010 Soulstice will go on tour around a variety of venues in the UK, and AtmosFEAR! will develop a similar traditional play for the summer season, to be performed outdoors by The Macabre Mummers.
