AtmosFEAR!
TERROR ISLAND • BLACKGANG CHINE THEME PARK • ISLE OF WIGHT – UNITED KINGDOM • SCREAM PARK

There is no escape...

In 2019 we were commissioned by Blackgang Chine Theme Park on the Isle of Wight to re-imagine their Halloween event as a an immersive and horrifying scream park, including all-new scare mazes, streetmosphere, icon character, marketing support and branding.

Using their existing infrastructure and some void spaces in existing buildings, we designed 3 contrasting mazes, each with a different theme, elements and style.  With gentle nods to the history and folklore of the island the attractions were to appeal to a demographic of thrill-seekers and expand on the park’s general audience.

THE SCARE MAZES

Amphibious! plunged guests headfirst into a nautical nightmare where ancient spirits of the sea had risen from the depths of the ocean and made their ‘haunt’ in an old fictional lighthouse known as ‘Poseidon’s Peak’.  Larger than life sea monsters and plenty of special effects created a visually stunning experience with impact scares and an impressive laser-sea culmination.

HEXcavation placed guests into an archaeological narrative and challenged them to navigate through endless underground tunnels in a bid to escape an ancient Pagan deity.  With very tight passageways, crawlspaces and a disorientating layout, HEXcavation ultimately presented an encounter with the deity itself, leaving guests screaming for the exit!

A BLOOD-SOAKED NIGHTMARE...

The most intense scare maze was a visceral and relentless assault on the senses inside The Blood Shed.  Home to a bloodthirsty band of serial-killer smugglers, guests explored the rotting cabins and encountered half-human incumbents.  The maze was built over 2 floors of an old sawmill combining blood soaked sets and a chainsaw attack culmination.

As part of the re-imagining of the event, we created an icon character who would appear across printed and digital marketing material, make appearances to promote the event and also meet guests when Terror Island was open to the public.  Drawing on a local island legend Lucy Lightfoot was designed and produced.  With a complex backstory, as yet untold, the character allows for further development across new attractions in years to come.

AWARD-WINNING

In addition to the 3 scare mazes live DJ’s, a Big Top, Food & Beverage offers, a Tarot Reader and Streetmosphere characters combined to ensure that Terror Island was the biggest Halloween event the island had ever hosted, and received wide critical acclaim.

After a successful season over Halloween 2019, Terror Island was nominated and subsequently went on to win Best New Event/Attraction in the UK at the 2020 Scar Awards hosted by ScareCON.
